More than 130 Years of Cleanliness

Grandpa Soap Co’s pine tar body wash can trace its history back more than 130 years (just like Martindale’s!)  to company founder Jess Hoffman. Jess began experimenting with soap-making in the early 1870s, concocting recipes in the kitchen of his Tippecanoe, Ohio farm. He used pine tar from the nearby forest, taking note of its cleansing and deodorizing properties. The soap impressed friends and family enough that he started selling it.

The simple ingredients and rugged scent spoke to turn-of-the-century Americans, reminding them of a pioneer history not long gone. Before long, Hoffman partnered with Beaver soap to keep up with demand. Soon, Grandpa’s soap was manufactured and distributed at scale. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Grandpa Soap Co. has been owned and operated by a single family since 1936. They strive to uphold Jess Hoffman’s principles and process, using only hard-working natural ingredients and sustainable, cruelty-free manufacturing.

All-Natural Ingredients

The base of Grandpa’s soap is naturally moisturizing coconut and Rainforest Alliance certified palm oil. Once the oil is saponified (turned into soap), it is combined with kiln-burned, creosote-free pine tar and other botanical ingredients. Pine tar has been used in soap for centuries to calm inflamed skin, eliminate odors, and remove dirt and grime. Pine tar body wash also features soothing steam-distilled cedarwood oil, as well as tea tree oil to cleanse and nourish.
