The Study: A Sweet Experiment

Researchers conducted an eight-week trial with 42 adults who were overweight and showed mild metabolic concerns. Participants swapped 5% of their daily calories from refined sugar with either maple syrup or a syrup designed to mimic it.

The study measured blood sugar control, fat storage, blood pressure, and gut health to determine the health benefits of maple syrup and how it might support overall wellness.

Unlike refined sugar, the sweet amber nectar contains natural minerals and antioxidants. A 1/3 cup (80 ml) serving provides:

  • Manganese: 165% of the RDI (important for energy production)

  • Smaller amounts of calcium, potassium, and iron

While the maple delight does offer these nutrients, it also contains about 60 grams of sugar per 1/3 cup. Its glycemic index (54) is lower than that of table sugar (65), which means it may affect blood sugar levels differently.

The study observed that replacing refined sugars with maple syrup for eight weeks may support improved glucose responses, as measured during the oral glucose tolerance test. Participants who used the sweet tree syrup showed a lower glucose area under the curve compared to those who substituted with sucrose syrup. The findings also observed that the sweet amber nectar supported reduction in android fat mass and systolic blood pressure compared to refined sugar.

Futhermore, exploratory results indicated that substituting with the sweet tree syrup supported changes in gut microbiota. For example, the natrual sweetner appeared to support an increase in beneficial gut bacteria while reducing harmful ones. These outcomes provide valuable insights into how the sweet tree nectar might support overall health, paving the way for further research.
